About this work

Richard began painting trees in 2004, inspired by the vivid bloom of the jacaranda in springtime in Cape Town. The seasonal transformation, with its distinctive violet canopy, marked the beginning of an ongoing exploration of trees as both subject and symbol. His connection to trees is deeply personal. From the towering blue gums lining the route between Kirstenbosch and Hout Bay, to the mythic presence of forests depicted in works such as The Lord of the Rings, trees represent strength, scale, and imagination. Childhood memories of treehouses and wilderness adventures continue to inform this body of work. For Richard, trees are more than landscape they are places of escape, curiosity, and nostalgia. This enduring fascination is reflected in his desire to one day build the ultimate treehouse for his son, creating a space to sleep, explore, and relive the wonder of childhood.
